Digital construction software goes from strength to strength at GroupBC

Two years since our Management Buyout (MBO), we’ve been incredibly busy. Here’s a rundown of some key things we’ve been up to in 2016.

Our digital construction software solutions, focussing on Building Information Modelling (BIM), asset lifecycle management and project assurance, has created huge interest within the industry. This proves to us that the software development work we do is fundamentally important to the UK’s world-leading transformation in the use of digital technologies within the architecture, design, construction and asset management sectors.

Software developments

Sainsbury'sWe’ve also been true to our roots as an innovative R&D software company. Developments around Geospatial data, the Semantic Web and Linked Data technologies have enabled us to make our software offering stronger, more dynamic and highly competitive. It has enabled us to compete with larger software companies and win exciting new contracts with companies such as Sainsbury’s, Wienerberger, Dynniq, BMB JV (BAM Nuttall, Morgan Sindall and Balfour Beatty) for their joint venture on the Thames Tideway Tunnel and INEOS Breagh, to name but a few.

GeoBIM & Linked Data

GeoBIMThe use of Geospatial data and its interconnectivity with digital modelling of construction projects and assets has been a key area for us. We’ve been working closely with our partners such as the Ordnance Survey (OS) and PCSG to make Open Data available within our BIM platform – commonly called GeoBIM. Our Chief Technology Officer Steve Crompton talked at length on this subject at Digital Construction Week in November – you can read the transcript and watch the video here.

GeoBIM VideoWe also attended the GeoBIM Europe event in Amsterdam which featured thirty-eight speakers over the two-day event. Topics discussed included the integration of geospatial and BIM throughout Europe within sustainable buildings and cities, transportation and facilities management.

Others in attendance came from a wide variety of industry sectors, including infrastructure, construction, engineering and geospatial organisations to ‘deliberate upon the amalgamation of geospatial technology and BIM for solving complex construction and infrastructural challenges in Europe.’

In addition to GeoBIM focussed events, we’ve attended a wider variety of events this year – and it’s proved a great decision for us to do so. Whilst we’ve been around since 1998, one of our key challenges has been to gain visibility. Whilst our software is actively being used by around 150,000 individuals each month, many of our software users don’t realise that they’re using our solutions as they are often integrated with other essential systems throughout whole supply chains.

We’ve therefore tried to rectify this by educating our users about the power of the systems they’re using.

DCW 2016We attended EcoBuild, spoke at various BIM seminars and conferences across the UK and finished the year with a high profile attendance at Digital Construction Week 2016. Other notable events we attended included the European BIM Summit in Barcelona and the ThinkBIM series for which we were headline sponsors and talked on RetroBIM.

G-Cloud 8 approved supplier

Also this year, following the release of the G-Cloud 8 framework, we were selected as an approved supplier as part of the UK Government’s initiative targeted at easing procurement of cloud based information technology by UK public-sector departments.

As 2016 draws to a close…

Merry Christmas…we’d like to wish all our customers, users and readers of this blog all the very best for the festive season. In the New Year we’ll be announcing the results of your charity choices. We’ll also be preparing for updates to our software and releasing further details about the events we’re attending and speaking at.

Season’s Greetings!
